NoseCraft

Well, the is getting all , so I thought I'd try to create something that might be fun, at least for any of you with an interest in aircraft.

The objective of this game is to identify an aircraft (or spacecraft) based on an image of the nose. Anything that flies and carries people is good, from any era, and any source of image (photo, movie frame, illustration, technical diagram, or w/e), but please use only real-world, working craft - nothing fictional or failed experimental, or stuff like air-to-air missiles. Image cropping is at your discretion, but please try to show the entire shape of the nose:
Image
equals
Image (oh, that looks like a Douglas DC-10!)
not
Image (wtf is that, part of a boat? abstract art?)
If you need a tool for cropping, I highly recommend as a full-featured image editor (Win/Mac/Linux), or Adobe has this , but it's flash based so it's kind of ugh. Also, you should avoid naming the image with the name of the craft.

I'll start you off with an easy one:
Image

If you identify the previous craft, post a new one.

A P-51D Mustang, an American WWII fighter/escort mostly used in the Atlantic Theater; probably .

As long as we're on WWII, see if you recognize this aircraft:

That's a Lockheed P-38 Lightning, the first one to enter active service in the war was used for reconnaissance.

How about this one? It's in black and white, so you can probably guess the time period it's from. A famous plane of it's class is the "Enola Gay".

Re: NoseCraft

That's a V22 Osprey, one of the early A models I believe. In my opinion it's a bad aircraft, due to an unusually high failure rate of the early models, and just general over-complication. Yes, either engine can power both rotors in case one fails, but the way that works is by driveshafts that run through a central gearbox, which is extra weight and moving parts. And of course it doesn't help if one of the rotors actually seizes up, only if one of the engines fails; if a rotor fails then you're totally screwed because you've now got upward thrust on one side and dead weight on the other.

Anyway, moving on...

Re: NoseCraft

That's an SU-27... "Flanker", I believe?

Yeah, Fox, the V-22's a terrible aircraft. Only one standard machine gun that requires the back open to fire, and if it gets shot down while still in helicopter mode, it's gonna come down like a bowling ball and kill everyone inside. Plus, we're way over time and budget on it, but we've spent so much time and money making it to replace the Sea Knight we just can't kill it.

Re: NoseCraft

Aww, that's not fair, Kroati. The SU-47 is an experimental aircraft! As far as I know, there's still only 1 in the world! You need to have something at least a little more mainstream.

Re: NoseCraft

Domingo's aircraft is the , and based on the pod under the nose I'm guessing it's a D model; it has now been completely retired. It was a really cool fighter, with swing-wings that would be spread out for better control and more lift at slower speeds, or swept back for less drag at higher speeds.

Here's another aircraft with some interesting capabilities:

Yes, it is of course the , sometimes called a "jump jet". It actually only has a single turbofan engine which feeds the four main nozzles, as well as small control nozzles on the nose, tail and wingtips.

Re: NoseCraft

kroati's aircraft is the , which was actually cobbled together from parts from a bunch of other aircraft. It was purely a prototype and a test-bed for the still experimental jet engines, never intended for mass production or combat (and thus comes somewhat close to my request that we avoid failed experiments, but it did actually fly at one point, so ok). Tough pick, took some hunting to find it.

There are several different names by which you could identify this one; any of them will be fine, really.
