AsterisK's guide to the lucifer cannon.

Some of you guys might know me when I have the lucifer cannon. ;) I've decided to share some of the strategies behind this weapon, so that you can learn how to fight effectively with this slow, but extremely powerful weapon.

1. General

Before I go into anything, here's the wiki link (credit to Flakes)

The lucifer cannon is the most expensive weapon at Stage 3, at a whopping 600 credits. That's 30% of the maximum credits you can have, with just the cannon alone. With a battlesuit and a grenade, that's 60%, or 1200 credits. That's quite a fortune, so if you get a lucifer cannon, make sure you don't lose it before you've made up at the very least enough to get that combo again. Getting a lucifer cannon and not knowing how to use it is the fastest way in the game to go broke. It fires a sun-looking projectile at a slow speed, but when fully charged (takes 10 energy out of a maximum 90, or 135 with a battery pack), it does an amazing amount of damage ('It does a maximum of 250 damage, 25 for each 'charge' -BlueEight).

2. Battlesuit vs Light Armor + Helmet + Batt Pack

This argument is important, as choosing the correct combination can mean life or death in certain situations. You don't want to be caught cornered next to a vent against a tyrant in a battlesuit, or be in one's face with light armor. First of all, Light Armor (70), Helmet (90), and Battery Pack (100) cost a total of 260 credits. Battlesuit costs 400. You get the added radar, and an extra 45 energy (it doesn't sound like a lot, but it can be), and it's cheaper. The downside of it is that you have to be more cautious, as every alien "status effect" (poison, for example) can still effect you, and you have less total armor, which is fatal vs a tyrant. I'll assume that you are average at dodging, meaning you will generally last an average amount of time vs an alien, so this is obviously a big deal.

If you also have a light armor combo, you will take more damage from splash, which makes facing enemies on top of you slightly more hurtful to you.

In extreme sudden death, use a battlesuit. RARELY will you see anything but tyrants with maybe a few advanced dragoons, so if you can't live very long, you won't be able to use that extra 45 energy, and since you automatically get 2000 credits, it doesn't matter that you take the more expensive route anymore. Battlesuits in extreme sudden death can give you enough of an edge to take out a tyrant where you couldn't have without it, but rarely the other way around.

3. Lucifer Cannon vs Dretch

It's common nowadays. Good aliens will use dretches to gain evo's without the cost bigger aliens have. Contrary to popular belief, just using a charged shot towards your feet isn't always the best way (although it is certainly extremely effective). If you have the aim of an ace, you can fire a single uncharged shot while charging up for a bigger shot in case your little shot misses. Not only can that kill the dretch in 1 hit, taking only 1 energy, it can also let you turn your attention on something else, like a tyrant charging towards you.

4. Lucifer Cannon vs Basilisk

Basilisks are getting more common in recent months, so I feel this should be included. If you are being attacked by a basilisk, aim at the floor with a charged shot IMMEDIATELY. If that does not kill it, you will at the very least be disconnected from it and can counter-attack if it tries to attack you again. If it runs away, there's not much you can do about it since the lucifer cannon moves so slow.

5. Lucifer Cannon vs Marauder

I consider this one of the hardest combinations, just because of the marauder's insane maneuverability. A good player can estimate where the marauder's going to land and fire at that spot, but if you're reading this, you probably aren't that good. Your best chance will probably be to get as close to it as possible and fire a shot into it's path, then strafing it while the shot does its work. Not much else you can do until you have experience though.

One thing to consider: Mara isn't as hard to kill as you think, you just have to be a professional with luci. Jumping as mara can be it's deadly mistake if you can successfully calculate where it will be and where your luci ball will be at the same time. It's nothing that can be taught, you have to learn this by yourself.

Here's another strategy for you to try.

AND for those games where theres 1 mara left and every1's chasing it. be smart. take a luci waste ur ammo til u have 9 ammo left. hold that shot for however long you want, it wont explode in ur face. and when u can, get a point blank shot off at the mara. or goon or whatever's left. works all the time.



6. Lucifer Cannon vs Dragoon

It's the same with the marauder, but it's a little easier, since dragoons can't often just fly over your head or jump off of walls to avoid your shots. The best thing you can really do is to meet a pounce it makes with a fully - nearly-fully charged shot in the face. Makes them cry hard. If a dragoon's busy sniping, sneak up on it and load a shot into it's face (or it's ass if you're into that sort of thing). If you're not sure, or not that good at hitting goons with the luci, fire at the ground where you estimate it to land. It does less damage than a direct shot, but you have a good chance more that you hit it and still do a respectable amount of damage.

7. Lucifer Cannon vs Tyrants

Just a rule for people who aren't good at dodging tyrants. If you face one, you should have a battlesuit. Only exception (that I can think of) is if you need to use a jetpack or to crouch to get where one can't reach you (most effective in extreme sudden death, where small aliens are a lot less likely to come and bite at your shit-filled underpants). Once you know how to dodge tyrants effectively, you can get away with an la+h+bp combo and a 1-0 with a tyrant. The best strategy is to strafe the tyrant as it's charging/walking/swiping at you and firing a charged shot into it's growling face. If you're not confident, fire at the ground where it'll run over. It doesn't do deadly damage, but it has a lot more to-hit and it still softens them up to other lucifer cannons or chainsuits.

8. Escaping Tactics

If you're running out of vitality (aka health), and you have little ammo left, RUN. Fire a luci shot as you round a corner, or fire into a doorway if you have to go outdoors. The best advice is to KEEP A LOOKOUT FOR ALIENS ON AN INTERCEPT PATH. Those can be deadly if you're in this situation, and if they're smaller than a dragoon, then you should dodge and fire your way back to your base. It's never a good idea to just make a mad dash for your base in a predictable pattern (or in general), so alter your dodging paths so that the alien has to keep guessing at where you're going to dodge to, which will increase your chance of getting home safely. It's a good idea to fire behind you once in a while (or often), so that aliens have to either dodge their way to you, or if they're caught off guard, you might either damage an alien severely or even kill it entirely, giving you an extra kill and credits to throw around.

9. Miscellaneous Strategies

(if you hold down the primary fire button all the time, and when you hear your gun about to overload (makes an annoying beep, you'll notice) press the secondary fire and it will fire a small shot, only using 1 ammo, and your luci will start charging again, if you walk around the map like this you will be ready with a charged shot whenever you encounter something. -Wireddd)

9. Closing Thoughts

The lucifer cannon is a unique weapon. It can single handedly kill any alien in the right hands, and can severely damage an alien base with a few shots. If you learn how to use this awesome weapon, not only will you benefit, but the human race will benefit as well, and give the aliens something to fear.

if you have 9 or less ammo your luci will never overload and you can walk around with it fully charged.

If you are about to fire a charged shot but change your mind, you can press and hold the secondary fire, release the primary and then let go of the secondary. if you time it right you will only lose 1 ammo, and won't fire a charged shot.

learning how to luci jump while somewhat hard is very useful on many maps.

ok if this makes any sense but here is a trick to TremX luci/xael :

Luci:
press mouse1 to charge and before it explodes on your face press mouse3 and hold when you are holding mouse3 you can release mouse1 and when you want to shoot just release mouse3

press mouse2 to charge and before it explodes on your face press mouse3 and hold when you are holding mouse3 you can release mouse2 and when you want to shoot just release mouse3

thanks for this! if I may add something,

this is common sense, but if you are not very good at aiming and/or are new to using a luci, then it is usually a very very bad idea to camp at your base and keep firing. You will either end up damaging your own base, killing team mates or even yourself. The only time you should probably do this is if you have no other choice, and you are stuck somehow... (like for example if it is ESD and ur arm is gone, and there are 10 rants waiting for you outside) Otherwise, camping with a luci in your base doesn't make any sense. Even shooting at aliens when ur team mates are in the way is dangerous.

P.S. correct me if i'm wrong :)

This is a great guide. It actually helped me out alot. I am not going to lie, I used to never buy a Luci becuase it was a waste for me. Now i get one whenever possible! :D

For those of you that use mouse3 for something else it is +button2. The reason why i say that is because when i was in FA there was much talk about this "glitch". I was pressing mouse 3 and it would blow up in my face. Then i was like "wtf im using mouse3 for something else, /me looks in other guid folder, oh looky it is +button2". So yea, +button2 :). Or if you go to your options it is Activate upgrade :P

thanks for the information... normally people dont come close to using the weapon in that way but its good to know that someone uses it correctly. most people ive seen just spam the thing and drive me up the wall.

If you are charging the luci and you decide not to fire --switch to blaster and you will not fire a shot or use any ammo :mrgreen:

bumped, my advise is to use a chainsuit instead of a luci for rants and goons it works well

I think this needs a little update o.o

AFAIK:
Surge increases max damage of Luci/Xael to 300 from 250, allowing you to kill things easier.
ESD is now VESD (kinda..) so hiding in a vent wont do anything except make you die from boredom, you'd be better off with a bsuit+Luci and running around shooting stuff to regain your HP.
Sure, the luci moves slow as hell but you can sprint, so sprint up to the escaping alien and aim for the corners to intercept it as it turns.
If in doubt, shoot. If still in doubt, shoot again.

I think that's it? o.o
