Disabilities.

Yesterday I was talking with my friend about children we may have in the future. He brought up an interesting subject.

He said, "If you knew that your child is going to have a disability (something that offers them a major disability, mentally or physically.) would you go through the process of paying thousands of dollars for them to be cared for? Or would you find an alternate way of handeling it? (Adoption, Abortion)."

While he was saying this, a rather meat-headed jock type person overheard him and replied with this, "I come to school to learn, I don't know why parents and teachers allow retards in our classrooms." My school allows the mentally challenged students that have an attention span to come into classes, "I think that they should never have been allowed to come to school." laughed and walked off.

Discuss.

Re: Disabilities.

You're being a little broad, could you specify a little bit?
For instance, you brought up a couple of different things, all of which could have (or already do) have their own thread.

Re: Disabilities.

I mean personally what are your opinions on allowing people/children with disabilities into public schooling systems.

Also, what would your answer to my friends question be. To rephrase, "If you knew that your child is going to have a disability (something that offers them a major disability, mentally or physically.) would you go through the process of paying thousands of dollars for them to be cared for? Or would you find an alternate way of handeling it? (Adoption, Abortion)."

Re: Disabilities.

Just because (s)he may have a disability doesn't mean they're retarded. My brother had a classmate in primary school who was suffering from some sort of nerve disease where he is almost entirely paralized, and he controls his wheelchair using his head. His nervous system has about 2 seconds lag of some sort as far as i remember. He had an IQ of 143 and his primary school scores were literally "off the paper" (only half the dot can be seen at the top of the page)

Re: Disabilities.

That's really interesting. In my opinion I don't think those with physical abilities should have to be exempt from schools, and they aren't. I also wish people didn't think of them as "retarded" either, because they aren't.

I read an article somewhere, about a girl with a disease in her brain that causes her to have uncontrolled speech and movements. She has seizures a lot, and can't stop from screaming and yelling out. But a specialist taught her to type, and they discovered she thought the same as everyone else did. She communicated through typing, and was able to give herself a voice. It was a really nice article, and I think the girl runs a blog.

Re: Disabilities.

I've wondered about the possibility in the future of leaving the physical body's restraints behind (such as in the case i provided, the guy who had the 2 second nervous system lag, he also had trouble controlling how much the muscle should move too from the way he jerks when he moves) for a robotical one. Robotical one is probably worse long-term though.

Re: Disabilities.

I would imagine, but maybe they'll develop a sort of cyber space avatar type thing where people with disabilities can go into an artificial environment with their brain and be taught there, or play, or something.

Ah, wishful thinking.

Re: Disabilities.

There are 2 retarded people who work at my workplace, and they are both absolutely disgusting. I don't know much about being retarded, but apparently to them it means "never shower or brush your teeth."

Re: Disabilities.

That is an example of them being improperly raised or not raised at all. I know someone like that and is physically repulsive (he plays in the dirt then eats everything with his hands). However, I also know another person who, aside from muttering to himself occasionally, functions very well.

Just to specify I am not trying to be offensive towards retarded people, just giving the only example I personally know of.

Re: Disabilities.

I know of a couple of people in my public schools system that are "retarded". I honestly don't care.

Gonna pull a Switzerland here. I just don't care about weather or not a child should be put in a public institution to learn stuff, let alone a special needs child. It probably varies from child to child anyways, so I wouldn't go making broad generalizations like that in the first place.

Now, as far as abortion goes, don't do it. Just don't. Friggin put that child up for adoption if need be. Dunno what will happen to the kid after words, they might not live a happy life if they don't know their parents or something, but heck, at least give them a chance.

I can tell you from experience that unless you are mentally gone, that no matter how odd that person looks or acts, there is a person there. I have always hated when people don't treat me normally.

Re: Disabilities.

I dont think people with disablitys should go to public schools because they go there and get made fun of / get stuff thrown at them, they should have special public schools for people with mental issues. I've always been afraid of mentally retarded people I have a phobia :|

Re: Disabilities.

Honestly, I don't think all kids should automatically be excluded from public schools just because they're "retarded".
There are many types of mental disabilities.
If the child's disabilities would cause them to be a distraction for the class and/or be unable to participate, then yes, they should have a special school where their needs can be addressed properly, rather than just disrupting the rest of the class.

Some of the world's greatest minds have "mental disabilities". A good example is the well known genius Stephen Hawking.
He has a mental disability known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (or ALS), which practically leaves his whole body paralyzed. He was born with it, but it didn't develop until he was 21.
What do you think would have happened if he were to have this disability during say, high school? He probably wouldn't have gone on to study such great things at Oxford.
That's why I think as long as they don't disrupt other's learning, people with mental disabilities should be allowed to participate in public school programs.
